Russell Moccasin was blessed by the friendship of legendary shooting writer and author Michael McIntosh. Michael served up his idea of the perfect pair of bird hunting boots in the mid 1980’s. We listened intently as Michael was a seasoned birdhooter, traveler and outdoorsman.
Michael described his perfect boot in eloquent terms as always, “About this high (7”), light of weight, cool in the hot, somewhat water resistant, easy to get on and off but sporting a serviceable sole with a fair amount of grip but not one of those God awful heavily cleated units. Know what I mean?”
A bit more conversation with Michael led us to our original McIntosh Birshooter design. We sent the first pair to him for a trial run and his assessment for his fall hunting travels. Several months later Michael reported back, “Just ideal. Couldn’t have done it better myself even if I possessed the knowledge and skill required to pull it off.”
As it turns out, Michael knew exactly what he was talking about. His McIntosh Birdshooter went on to become one of our all time favorite models. We thank him for sharing his thoughts with us. Michael was not only a unique and gifted writer, but also a true friend.
After nearly 30 years in the Russell line, we have given the McIntosh Birdshooter an upgrade in leathers but have maintained Michael’s original design parameters to the T. It’s still a lightweight single vamp 7-inch boot fitted with a grippy Vibram Airbob sole...just with better leathers that are available to us now.
One version of the improved McIntosh Birdshooter is made from highly water resistant shrunken grain American Bison that features a showy grain and texture pattern, available in a rich chocolate brown, cognac or black. All three color combinations are trimmed in color coordinated German Elk leather. The second version is made out of soft, supple, lightly oiled tan Muleskinner leather, trimmed in chocolate German Elk. Muleskinner is a brand new leather for 2014...one that has the look of suede but far greater water resistant qualities... right out of the box it offers surprising water resistance. Also available in women’s sizes.

Best boots I've ever worn!
Posted by Unknown on 6th Feb 2016
I got these with a double vamp, heel counters, leather lined and no insulation. They are, by far, the best and most comfortable boots I have ever worn. I'm 60 and a wildlife biologist and have worn field boots of all kinds, all conditions, and all over the country, and these are the best. The lower height fits my needs best without adding weight. I've been wearing them all this past fall hunting and working and they were the best right out of the box. I've never had a pair of boots that I didn't look forward to taking off at the end of the day, but these I have worn 15-18 hrs at a time and were still comfortable. The fit, of course, was perfect, but the style, build and function of these boots is amazing. Thanks!!
